An office move can look complete when the furniture is in place and the keys are handed over. But if people arrive on Monday to unreliable Wi-Fi, too few network points or a communications cabinet that cannot support the business, the move is not complete at all. Structured cabling for office moves should be planned as a core part of the relocation, not treated as a last-minute task for the week before opening.

Getting it right means more than running cables to desks. It means designing a dependable physical network that supports your people, devices, security and growth plans from day one.
Start with how the new office will work
A floor plan is useful, but it is only the starting point. Before specifying outlets, cable routes or cabinet sizes, establish how the space will operate in practice. Where will fixed desks sit? Will teams use hot-desking? Which meeting rooms need video conferencing? Are there reception systems, printers, access-control readers, CCTV cameras or wireless access points to connect?
This is also the point to consider hybrid working. A smaller office may need fewer desk outlets than a traditional layout, yet it may require stronger wireless coverage, more meeting-room connectivity and enough capacity for staff to work on-site during busier periods. The correct design depends on your working model, not simply the number of people on payroll.

The space should have suitable power, ventilation and cable management, as well as controlled access. If internet access, cloud applications, phone systems or payment services are business-critical, resilience should be discussed before the move rather than after the first outage.

When a staff member changes desk, a new printer is fitted or a fault is reported, accurate documentation helps support teams resolve the issue quickly. It also prevents the network becoming dependent on one person remembering what was installed years earlier.
Do not treat Wi-Fi as separate from the cabling plan
Modern offices rely heavily on wireless networking, but Wi-Fi performance still depends on a sound wired foundation. Each wireless access point needs a data connection, usually powered through the network cable using Power over Ethernet. The placement of those access points should be informed by a wireless survey and the building layout, not guessed from a floor plan alone.

Build the move plan around testing and cutover
A tidy installation is not enough. Each cable should be tested and certified so that faults, poor terminations and performance issues are found before the office opens. Test results provide confidence that the installed cabling meets the expected standard and create a useful record for future support.
The wider cutover plan should set out what happens to broadband services, firewalls, switches, phones, printers, servers and cloud access. Some services can be prepared in advance, while others require a defined change window. Internet lead times can be longer than expected, particularly where new circuits or building works are involved, so ordering connectivity early is essential.
